Patternmaker and Seamstress based in Amsterdam
Hi! I'm Carissa! I am a pattern maker and seamstress based in Amsterdam, but originally from the United States. My mom taught me to sew when I young, and I quickly realized that I could make all the princess dresses of my dreams, that she otherwise would not have bought me. My creativity ran wild.
When I started university, I got a job at the school's costume shop; making, repairing, and altering costumes for the plays and musicals. It was there I learned pattern drafting and draping, and how to turn a flat drawing into a three-dimensional work of art. I already loved the theatre, but creating the costumes for shows felt like a whole new world of magic.
Upon graduating, I was hired at that university costume shop full time. I discovered a passion for womenswear —specifically corsetry—and had the pleasure to teach corset making classes for undergraduates. Many of my students were completely new to sewing, and by the end of the semester they had made a custom corset from their own measurements!
In 2022, I made the move with my husband (and our then 15 year old cat) from Los Angeles to Berlin, and now Amsterdam. I'm so excited for this new chapter in my life, but also the ability to continue doing what I love.
I enjoy using vintage and historical techniques in my pattern making and sewing, to give my pieces a sense of timelessness. I value quality over everything, so I prefer to go for a more minimalistic approach to better showcase my work. Whenever possible, I use thrifted fabrics and notions to be more sustainable. I've also been teaching myself various forms of visible mending, which I find very relaxing to do when winding down in the evenings and on long train rides.
I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that has allowed me to perfect my craftsmanship.
