"In the Red and Brown Water" By Tarell Alvin McCraney

The orange skirt was inspired by tied skirts worn by tribal people, but had to be rigged for the theatre to always look perfectly tied. I drafted this wrap skirt originally from a basic block, adding pleats coming to one side seam. The hanging "tied" portion was draped overtop and stitched down. The skirt is secured beneath this tie by a number of snaps and hooks, but remains open from the hip-down.

The blue skirt is a more western-inspired wrap skirt, with long ruffles to move with the dancing of the character. The skirt was drafted from a basic block.

The halter neck top is meant to look like a handkerchief tied top, but also had to be rigged for the theatre. It was draped on a form and bust darts were added for shape after fitting. It was securely fastened in the back with hooks and snaps, but made to look as though it was tied.
