"West Side Story," based on a conception of Jerome Robbins. Book by Arthur Laurents, Music by Leonard Bernstein, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
In this variation of West Side Story, the Sharks were dressed in vibrant colors, while the Jets were in pastels. I built a number of the dresses for the ensemble characters to emphasize this color distinction. The dresses have full skirts for the Sharks, and less full for the Jets.
The blue dress is a triple circle skirt made with three colors of satin (6 panels in the skirt, and matching thread for each shade of blue), it was built for a principal dancer, and needed lots of movement. We built twelve dresses for this show, so I also assisted in stitching a number of the other ones as well, though my coworkers and I shared a lot of the work, so I can't fully say what was my work versus others.
Since their debut, these dresses have shown up in a number of shows since, usually in a group, including "Sondheim on Sondheim," costume designed by Elle Patrick, April 2023, Bing Theatre (Shown in last photo —production photo by Craig Schwartz)
